Red Sox to Sign Infielder Chris Owings to Minor League Deal
By Ryan Flores

The Boston Red Sox just added some depth to the organization in the form of a veteran infielder.
On Monday, the Red Sox signed Chris Owings to a minor league deal. Owings will spend time at extended spring training before heading off to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Owings was released by the Kansas City Royals after just 40 games, where he batted .133 with 2 homers and 9 RBI. He also has a wRC+ of 8, which shows just how abysmal he's been in 2019.
His 2019 struggles aren't exactly indicative of the caliber of player he is, as he hit .250 with 31 homers in 580 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks prior to this season.
Red Sox sign utilityman Chris Owings to a minor league deal. He’ll go to Fort Myers for extended spring training before reporting to Pawtucket. Owings has 236 career games at short, 181 at second and 149 in the outfield (mostly in right and center).

While Owings isn't exactly the ideal bat that Red Sox fans want in their lineup, he provides insurance in case there are even more injuries that Boston has to deal with. With his ability to play second base, third base, shortstop and the outfield, it's no surprise that the Red Sox took a flyer on him.
If Owings is able to recapture his Diamondbacks form, then Boston may have found themselves a decent bench piece for its hunt for the playoffs.
