3 Free Agents Spurs Should Target This Offseason

In the 2019-2020 season, the San Antonio Spurs were not the usual Spurs NBA fans have become accustomed to. Gregg Popovich's side has made 22 straight NBA playoff appearances, but their 27-36 record before the season was put on hiatus meant all signs were pointing to that streak ending.

If the Spurs want to get back to winning, there will need to be some substantial changes to their roster by the start of next season. These three players should be their main targets whenever free agency begins.

3. DeMarcus Cousins

The Spurs love reviving careers (Boris Diaw, for example), but DeMarcus Cousins would be an entirely new challenge. His on-court attitude does not fit the traditional Spurs' style, and injury concerns are big when talking about a player who hasn't appeared in more than 48 games in a season since 2016-2017. Cousins isn't exactly a highly-coveted asset currently, and could be a cheap high-upside pickup for San Antonio.

2. Montrezl Harrell

Montrezl Harrell is a key piece on the Los Angeles Clippers. This year, Harrell put up 18.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game off the bench, making him a prime contender for Sixth Man of the Year. Harrell will be an unrestricted free agent when the year comes to a close, and the Clippers don't have much money to re-sign him. If the Spurs manage to poach him, he would be a great fit alongside LaMarcus Aldridge in the starting frontcourt.

1. Brandon Ingram

Brandon Ingram made his first All-Star appearance this season for the New Orleans Pelicans, and is one of the NBA's premier young talents. He will be a restricted free agent in 2020, and the Pelicans will do everything they can to keep him. He'll be hard to land, but the Ingram is the star wing the Spurs have been lacking since Kawhi Leonard left. If DeMar DeRozan doesn't return, Ingram should be San Antonio's first choice to take his starting spot next season.
