VIDEO: WKU Wins First Responders Bowl on 52-Yard FG After Unbelievable Choke by Western Michigan
By Mark Powell

Oh, the curse of the free play. Western Michigan fell victim to a 12 men on the field call with no time left on the clock, giving WKU one last chance at a desperation field goal attempt. Freshman Western Kentucky kicker Cory Munson drilled the 52-yarder with ease, giving the Hilltoppers the win at the gun.

Well...after the gun, technically.
To recap, this might be the worst bowl game choke in recent memory.
To recap:
— Yahoo Sports College Football (@YahooSportsCFB) December 30, 2019
- Western Michigan QB falls over with 15 yards of grass in front of him on 3rd & 1
- WMU turns it over on downs
- Western Kentucky Hail Mary falls incomplete
- WMU penalized for 12 men on field
- WKU hits game-winning 52-yard FG on untimed down
FINAL WKU 23, WMU 20
How is any of that even possible?
Bowl games are meaningless for some Power-5 teams which typically have CFP aspirations late in the season. For Group-of-5 squads like WKU and WMU, however, these final showcases are everything. We feel for the Broncos, who just barely let this game out of their grasp.
