VIDEO: Matt Carpenter Cleverly Counters the Marlins Shift by Bunting for a Double

Matt Carpenter finally did what most baseball fans have been screaming for players to do: bunt against the shift! The St. Louis Cardinals first baseman got crafty, laying one down the left field line to beat the shift. It worked way better than he was expecting however, as he managed to scoot into second base with a double!

That's smart baseball. Carpenter took advantage of the massive hole that the shift left on the opposite side of the infield and managed to put himself in scoring position with minimal effort.

The bunt paid off too. Carpenter eventually came around to score, giving the Cardinals a vital extra run and some breathing room heading into the late innings of their game against the Marlins.

Maybe defenses across the league will take this as a lesson when putting on extreme shifts to opposing hitters.
