This Patriots-Colts Trade for Jacoby Brissett Just Makes Sense

Assuming the New England Patriots intend on competing in 2020, they likely won't roll with Jarrett Stidham at quarterback. Even though the team lost a legion of starters from last season -- Tom Brady, Jamie Collins, and Kyle Van Noy, to name a few -- the Pats still have a nice roster, and Bill Belichick is still running the show.

Therefore, New England will almost definitely look to brainstorm a trade for an adequate starter. Luckily for them, Jacoby Brissett, who is familiar with the Patriots' system, is in limbo after the Colts' reported signing of veteran Philip Rivers.

With that in mind, let's play general manager and conjure up a deal that works out for both teams.

Jacoby Brissett Contract

Brissett is set to become a free agent after the 2020 season. He has one year remaining on the two-year, $15 million contract he signed with Indianapolis in 2018. If the Colts were to trade him prior to June 1, they would save almost $16 million in cap space. Additionally, the team would only have to swallow $5 million in dead money.

That makes trading him so much less complicated.

The Patriots won't need to give up the farm for Brissett, but Indy will likely ask for some of New England's slew of draft picks. Though his resume is less than impressive, the 27-year-old proved with the Colts that he could be a solid starter in the right system. Therefore, we don't see why a third-, fourth-, and seventh-round draft pick in 2020 couldn't get a deal done.

Indianapolis has no reason not to offload Brissett -- the organization would save just $8.875 million if it released him. This trade with the Patriots just make sense.
