Initial reports from the ground pegged the David Ortiz shooting as a botched robbery, before clarifying into what we all saw with our own eyes: this was a hit on Big Papi.

However, Dominican authorities went on the record this week to claim the incident was a case of mistaken identity.

Many of us doubted that narrative, and the supposed "intended target" David Fernandez backed up the skeptics on Friday. He's now claiming that he has no enemies and can't understand why someone would put a $8,000 dollar hit on him.

Fernandez, who is a friend of the former Red Sox slugger, was with Ortiz the night Big Papi got shot outside of the nightclub in the Dominican Republic.

Contrary to the opinion of local authorities, Fernandez doesn't believe he was the one being shot at, saying to 106.5 FM, a Dominican radio station, "I don't know where these rumors came from, I don't even have a cat as an enemy."

According to the authorities, Fernandez's cousin, Victor Hugo Gomez Vasquez, put the alleged hit on him. This remains a highly unverifiable claim.

Vasquez, who was a fugitive believed to be part of the Del Golfo, a Mexican drug cartel, was caught in 2011 by Dominican drug investigators after Fernandez ratted out his cousin. Per the authorities, the hit was intended to be in retaliation.
