It's really a matter of when, not if, the Kansas City Chiefs sign quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a contract extension. The 24-year-old phenom is due for a enormous pay day, and general manager Brett Veach recently said that he'd like to get him signed by the start of training camp.

Mahomes has demonstrated patience during the negotiation process, and his latest comments on those discussions will fire up Chiefs Kingdom. The Super Bowl MVP says that he wants to be in Kansas City "for a long time," and that he wholly trusts the organization that it will be handled the right way.

In a no-brainer move, the Chiefs picked up the fifth-year option on Mahomes' rookie deal. As things stand, the former No. 10 overall pick is slated to pocket $5.3 million in 2020 and $24.83 million in 2021. It's fair to assume that his new contract, whenever it's signed, will pay him well north of $30 million annually.

Until then, Mahomes' No. 1 focus will be winning football games.

These quotes should ease the minds of fans in Kansas City. Mahomes loves being a Chief and will sign what is sure to be a record-breaking extension before long. He's not going anywhere, but fans will need to be remain patient as both sides continue to work out the kinks.
