Jeff Nelson was the at the center of a scary scene during Game 3 of the ALCS on Tuesday. Nelson, who was the home plate umpire, was forced to leave the game after taking two foul balls off of his mask a few innings apart.

One day later, while waiting out the rain, the MLB announced on Wednesday that Nelson will not return to the series after reportedly suffering a concussion.

Mike Everitt will replace Nelson on the staff and will act as the crew chief.

Nelson was replaced behind home plate during Game 3 by Kerwin Danley, and the switch caused a 17-minute delay between innings.

The rest of the game was played without a left-field line umpire. Postseason games, of course, include a six-man umpire crew, with two added to each foul lines.

Everitt most recently was the home plate umpire for this year's NL Wild Card game between the Nationals and Brewers. In his career, he has worked three World Series and six League Championship series.

The ALCS will resume Thursday after Game 4 was postponed on Wednesday due to rain.
