The NHL trade deadline is less than 24 hours away, and arguably the top player on the trading block is New York Rangers winger and impending free agent Chris Kreider.

Despite the team winning seven of its last eight games, that success has not helped the ongoing contract negotiations.

According to Darren Dreger of TSN, hopes of a new contract between Kreider and the Rangers are "fading." If nothing changes in the coming hours, the Rangers will be inclined to listen on offers for Kreider.

The talks between both parties are difficult, because Kreider is rumored to be commanding an annual salary of $7 million on his new contract. Given the team is in the midst of a rebuild, the Rangers would eye a significant return for Kreider in a trade.

Specifically, the Rangers would be looking for a first-round pick, a prospect, and either an NHL player, lower-level prospect, or late-round draft pick, according to NHL insider Bob McKenzie.

Playoff contenders are looking for a talent like Kreider to put their team over the edge. He is a speedy winger with a scoring prowess who could be a significant boost to any unit. Thus far, the Boston Bruins and Colorado Avalanche have emerged as early favorites for his services.

This season, Kreider is on pace for a career year, having tallied 24 goals and 21 assists in 60 games.

Even though a new contract looks impossible prior to the trade deadline, that doesn't mean Kreider will be moved. But if the Rangers receive an astronomical offer, the team would be wise to consider it.
