Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys have been scorned in the past for negotiating contracts with his players directly rather than their agents, but that practice is technically not against the rules of the NFL.

You know what is against the rules? Negotiating a contract with a third party that isn't certified with the NFLPA to negotiate player contracts. But Jerry Jones, completely unprompted, has now admitted to a past contract negotiation with Jay-Z concerning Dez Bryant.

I guess he didn't read this part of the CBA.

“Clubs are prohibited from engaging in individual contract negotiations with any agent who is not listed by the NFLPA as being duly certified by the NFLPA in accordance with its role as exclusive bargaining agent for NFL players,” the league's current collective bargaining agreement states in Article 48, Section 1.

If it was any other owner, they'd be penalized by the NFL almost certainly. However, we are talking about the all-powerful Jerry Jones-- and besides, Jay-Z now has an official partnership with the NFL. All in a day's work for the man who owns the most valuable franchise in global sports.
