FSU AD's Doomsday Quote About Potential Cancellation of Season Due to COVID-19 Misses the Point

It pains us to report that another community figure has decided to take a brash stance that flies in the face of the imperative instructions from public health professionals amid the coronavirus crisis.

That individual is David Coburn, the athletic director of Florida State. Speaking on the financial predicament that would surface if COVID-19 was to force the NCAA to cancel the 2020 college football season, Coburn said, "...God help us if that is the scenario."

We are fully aware of the financial impact that the pandemic has had on the nation. The unemployment tolls are raising every single day and there's no doubting that the economy is faltering.

However, Coburn takes zero of that into consideration here.

His take is wholly self-absorbed in that it solely acknowledged how no sports would affect the revenue that FSU would bring in. Per the US Department of Education, the Seminoles' football program produced nearly $69 million in the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

Call us crazy, but something tells us that Coburn should consider the health of the country over putting his student-athletes -- who do NOT profit off their name, image, and likeness -- at unnecessary risk so that the program can create some income.
