Given the sheer overhaul their coaching staff has undergone thus far this offseason, it's fair to presume that the Chicago Cubs will be looking to bring in a few new players as well.

Well, general manager Theo Epstein has reportedly identified Kansas City Royals star Whit Merrifield as a trade target.

Merrifield, who just completed the first campaign of a four-year, $16.25 million contract extension he signed with the Royals prior to 2019, would be a tremendous get for the Cubs.

With Ben Zobrist, 38, getting up there in age, Chicago should absolutely be in the market for a middle infielder to pair with Javier Baez, who they are reportedly looking to extend in the near future.

A shortstop-second base combo of Merrifield and El Mago would be something to talk about, folks.

What makes the South Carolina product all the more valuable is his versatility. Last season, he logged 77 games in the outfield and 82 games at second base for KC. Further, he's a proven contact hitter, a perk that the Cubbies woefully lacked in their lineup throughout 2019.

Merrifield is fresh off posting a .302/.348/.463 slash line alongside 16 home runs, 74 RBI, 206 hits, 105 runs scored and 20 stolen bases.

In the meantime, stay tuned for updates to see if Chicago acts on their intentions to acquire the 30-year-old vet.
