A player that was once projected to be a staple of the Chicago Cubs' middle infield for the long haul is on the verge of inking a deal to play overseas.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Addison Russell is finalizing a one-year deal with the Kiwoom Heroes of South Korea's KBO. The 26-year-old infielder was non-tendered by Chicago after serving a 40-game suspension for violating MLB's domestic violence policy.

Russell's future in the Windy City grew bleak after his former wife, Melisa Reidy, accused him of physical and emotional abuse on several occasions throughout their marriage. It was truly baffling that the Cubs held on to him for as long as they did following the disturbing allegations.

On top of that, however, the Florida native struggled to develop as a player following his All-Star campaign in 2016. Since that year, the former No. 11 overall pick has slashed just .242/309/.383 with 26 home runs and 104 RBI in 322 games. It really seemed as if Russell's off-field issues were reflecting in his play on the diamond, as he also struggled mightily with his glove last season.

The fallen Cubs star will have every chance to revive his professional career in South Korea, but he's going to have to earn his playing time. The Heroes currently sit fourth in the KBO standings with a 24-17 record, and he'll be permitted to cut zero corners as he sets out on this new endeavor.
