Cowboys Need to Explore Earl Thomas Trade With Ravens While His Value is at Rock Bottom

The Baltimore Ravens are looking for any excuse to rid themselves of safety Earl Thomas after the news of a disturbing altercation with his wife in April surfaced last week. The latest buzz suggests that the Ravens are investigating whether the six-time Pro Bowler violated his contract.

Any relevant findings would permit Baltimore to void the $10 million fully guaranteed portion of his salary for the 2020 season. If the franchise is unable to prove that a violation transpired, you can bet that it would be keen on shopping Thomas.

If that turns out to be the case, the Dallas Cowboys should look to pounce while the 31-year-old's value is the lowest it's ever been.

Dallas' past interest in Thomas is well-documented. Better still, the former Legion of Boom stalwart had previously wanted to return to his home state. Football fans will remember Thomas famously telling the Cowboys to "come get him" after a game against the Seattle Seahawks back in 2017. A few months later, Dallas was flirting with the idea of trading for the former No. 14 overall pick ahead of the 2018 NFL Draft.

The fit, from that aspect, is apparent. More important, however, is the fact that the Cowboys still need help in the secondary following the departure of Byron Jones. A pairing of HaHa Clinton-Dix and Thomas at safety would give the team one of the best tandems in the league. They would also help protect Dallas' shaky rotation of cornerbacks.

Jerry Jones has a history of keeping the faith in players with suspect reputations -- Greg Hardy, Aldon Smith and Randy Gregory, to name a few -- and Thomas, even though he didn't commit any crimes, undoubtedly falls under that description now.

The Ravens are looking for an easy out, and the Cowboys shouldn't think twice about giving them just that, as well as fulfilling a destiny several years in the making.
