The Indianapolis Colts signing Philip Rivers, who hit the proverbial veteran wall in a big way last season, remains one of the more puzzling moves of the offseason. To make matters worse for Indy fans, the latest NFL buzz suggests that the Colts blew it by jumping the gun to sign the 38-year-old quarterback.

Per Yahoo! Sports insider Charles Robinson, Indianapolis was going to pursue Andy Dalton via trade had Rivers not agreed to play for the Colts.

Or they could have just stuck with Jacoby Brissett and waited for Dalton to get released! We all saw it coming.

The Cincinnati Bengals released Dalton after failing to find a trade parter for him. As we know, the three-time Pro Bowler went on to sign a one-year, $3 million deal with the Dallas Cowboys to back up Dak Prescott.

To think that Indy is giving Rivers -- who is clearly the lesser of the two quarterbacks at this stage of his career -- $25 million for just one season looks egregious. In 2019, Rivers tossed 23 touchdowns compared to a whopping 20 interceptions. Considering how many mindless jump balls he chucked up to his receivers, it's a miracle that latter tally wasn't higher. The Chargers, despite boasting an elite roster, stumbled to a 5-11 record.

Dalton could've been acquired for pennies on the dollar had Indianapolis not pounced on the opportunity to land Rivers in free agency. And please don't rebut with the Red Rifle's numbers from last season. Not only were the Bengals tanking, but he was also working with one of the NFL's worst offensive lines. On top of that, All-Pro wideout AJ Green didn't play a single snap.

The Colts look like fools in light of this report. There's really no other way to put it.
