Before we ever had JR Smith's infamous blunder in Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals, the ultimate basketball championship snafu of record belonged to Chris Webber and his mental lapse for Michigan in the dying seconds of the 1993 NCAA title game. 27 years ago today, Webber essentially handed North Carolina its third-ever national championship, forcing Michigan's Fab Five to settle for runner-up status for the second consecutive season.

With under 20 seconds remaining and trailing by two points, C-Webb secured a rebound off a missed free throw and was lucky the ref didn't catch his blatant travel right in front of UNC's bench. Webber sprinted to the other end of the court but found himself trapped in the corner, at which point he tried to call a timeout.

The only problem? The Wolverines were out of timeouts. The officials rightfully administered a technical foul that sent Carolina right back to the free throw line. The Maize and Blue could have tied the game and sent it to overtime or won it all with a three-pointer, but instead, the Tar Heels walked away with a six-point win – and Webber took the lion's share of the blame.

Certainly not the Fab Five's finest moment. Webber decided to opt for the NBA and was 1993's No. 1 overall draft pick, and he carved out a fine professional career that should land him in the Hall of Fame one day. However, even all these years later, few moments could Michigan fans more than that fateful timeout call.
