Chiefs Really Need to Address Running Back Position Since Damien Williams Will Be a Free Agent in 2021

While the Kansas City Chiefs are coming off an impressive Super Bowl victory, that doesn't mean they have their future completely planned out. 2018 MVP Patrick Mahomes should be around for a long time, but what about the rest of KC's star-studded offense?

The Chiefs have surrounded Mahomes with a ton of talented weapons on offense, and that includes running back Damien Williams. The 27-year old started a career-high six games in 2019 and was a pivotal piece of the Chiefs' offense throughout its playoff run. While he's impressed in his stint in KC, he is set to hit the open market next year, leaving GM Brett Veach with some important decisions to make regarding the future of the position.

For how much he's contributed to the offense, Williams' contract is an absolute steal in the Chiefs' eyes. His base salary has always been under $2 million annually, which is just a fraction of the what the league's highest-paid halfbacks make.

Given the recent trend of teams opting against handing out extensions to running backs, the Chiefs may be better off letting Williams walk in 2021. Instead, they could look to ink a veteran on a one-year deal, or even look to address the future of the backfield in this year or next year's draft.

While Williams will surely have a significant role to play in KC's offense in 2020, the team has some major contracts to dole out in the near future, and may be wise to start seeking out cheaper alternatives to eventually replace the former Oklahoma standout.
