Matt Carpenter's season of woe took yet another problematic turn on Tuesday.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed their veteran third baseman on the 10-day injured list with a right foot contusion and called up infielder Edmundo Sosa.

Carpenter, who was pulled from Monday's game after sustaining the injury, has struggled to produce this year. He's posted a meager 84 OPS+, a far cry from his career-high mark of 144 from last year.

He's seen a significant drop-off in power as well. Despite the league's growing propensity for the long ball, Carpenter only has 10 home runs this year, less than a third of the 36 dingers he hit in 2018.

While he recovers, the Cardinals will try their luck with their 10th overall prospect in Sosa. A shortstop by trade, he has some experience at third base in the minors. He also slashed .252/.304/.424 in Triple-A this year with 10 home runs through 83 games.

It's a shame that Carpenter's season hasn't panned out well. Many had high expectations for him after he finished ninth in MVP voting last year, but he just hasn't been able to live up to them.

Hopefully his stay on the IL is a short one, and while he's there, he can get himself back into top form.
