Jedd Gyorko likely won't be returning to the Cardinals as soon as first thought.

The St. Louis Cardinals' infielder suffered a setback while recovering from a calf injury and isn't expected to come off of the injured list soon.

He was sent to the IL earlier in the month. Calf injuries have plagued his season from the very beginning, as he was sidelined with one in the early days of spring training as well.

When he has been healthy, though, he hasn't played particularly well either. Over 62 plate appearances in 2019, he's slashing a paltry .196/.274/.304 with just two home runs and seven runs driven in.

The numbers are a far cry from what he's been able to do in the past as the utility man for the Cardinals. Prior to this season, he had a .794 career OPS with St. Louis.

However, considering his season hasn't gone as well as the team had hoped, perhaps a few extra days of rest in rehabbing the injury could do him some good.

It's certainly better to not rush him back if he's struggling and has had to deal with similar injuries multiple times this year.
