For an enterprising NFL team, trawling the undrafted free agent bargain bin can feel a bit like playing roulette (but not like in Grand Theft Auto, where you can save the game before you blow your largesse). No matter how smart you think you are, it's hard to feel like you've really won.

But in the case of the Cleveland Browns, there's no reason not to smile after scooping up running back Brian Herrien. His numbers won't jump off the page, but the measurables don't tell the whole story -- a former teammate of Browns star Nick Chubb at the University of Georgia, he's a fan favorite who's ready to contribute to winning football in essential and even unexpected ways.

Name one NFL team who wouldn't want a backup running back who can do that. All told, he truly is the perfect shadow for Chubb on this upwardly mobile Cleveland team.

Herrien was panned at the NFL Combine for his 4.6 speed in the 40-yard dash, and it's worth noting that he was never the featured back at UGA. Context matters here, though, as he was teammates with everyone from Chubb to Sony Michel to Elijah Holyfield to D'Andre Swift. There's something to be said for a kid who enters the NFL without a whole lot of mileage on him. Of course, he still managed to run for five yards per rush on 277 college carries, which makes him no slouch, especially in the SEC

For good measure, he additionally proved that he can find the end zone and make plays in the passing game out of the backfield. There truly is no downside to this UDFA pickup, and the Browns could very well have discovered a hardworking future locker room favorite.
