Let's be honest, Mets fans: you probably wanted GM Brodie Van Wagenen gone after seemingly every offseason deal went the wrong way and he decided to buy instead of sell at the trade deadline.

They aren't contending. What was he thinking, right?

Oh, and I'm sure the Mets faithful rolled their eyes after reading his post trade deadline Twitter post.

It may have read as "pie in the sky," especially when he talked about winning this year and in the near future. However, to Brodie and the Mets' credit, they're in the playoff mix RIGHT NOW.

Just one week later.

After Sunday's action where they blew out Pittsburgh 13-2, the Mets are winners of nine of their last 10 games, and are just three games out of a Wild Card spot, buoyed by their intact starting rotation's dominance.

Everyone would've understood if Van Wagenen and Co. had traded Wheeler and even Syndergaard at the deadline, but instead, he stood by his game plan and added to the rotation with Marcus Stroman. When you look at it now, the Mets might have the deepest starting staff in the National League.

Does that mean their bullpen still isn't a problem and several key offensive players remain hobbled? No. But as the team is currently constructed, especially the rotation, and with the way they're gelling, they could make a playoff push.

Mets fans had their torches and pitchforks ready to kick Brodie out of town very recently, but in a week's time, he's getting praise and could look like a genius by not deciding to fold.
