A compelling trade materialized on Wednesday morning that saw the Brewers trade outfielder Trent Grisham and right-hander Zack Davies to the Padres in exchange for infield prospect Luis Urias and left-hander Eric Lauer.

By and large, it was a swap of veteran hurlers and highly-touted prospects that should leave Cardinals and Cubs fans feeling delighted.

Why do we feel this way?

Because the Brewers were alarmingly premature in giving up on Grisham, a player widely ranked as a top-50 or so prospect heading into the 2019 season. After all, he hit .300/.407/.603 paired with 25 home runs and 71 RBI in just 97 games with Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A San Antonio before receiving the call-up.

Sure, he struggled in the 51 games he appeared in for Milwaukee -- he slashed 231/.328/.410 with six homers and 24 RBI -- but prospects that make a seamless transition from the minors to MLB are few and far between.

That's to say nothing of the high-end defense he provided in the outfield for Milwaukee.

Did the Brewers jump ship because they presumed that fans would never forgive Grisham for his error in the eighth inning of the NL Wild Card Game that sealed the club's premature postseason exit?

Who knows. If so, that's absurd.

The fact is that Grisham boasts all kinds of potential, and Cards and Cubbies fans should have smug grins on their faces knowing he's out of NL Central after Wednesday's trade.
