The Boston Red Sox did not defend their World Series title effectively in 2019. To be frank, it was a complete disaster. However, they still have a talented core that will put them in the mix to compete in 2020.

That may be true, but plenty of moves need to be made before that can become a reality. Here are three new additions the Red Sox need to make this offseason.

3. Sign All-Star Closer Will Smith

Boston's bullpen did improve as the season progressed, but that doesn't mean it doesn't need an upgrade. They failed to address things this past winter and they can't make the same mistake twice, which is why they need to pony up and sign All-Star closer Will Smith. It won't be cheap, but it'll be a lot easier to swallow compared to what Aroldis Chapman will sign for, if he opts out. The Red Sox need to win the games they are supposed to, and Smith gives them the best chance of doing that. He can be a defined closer, or he could be a malleable lefty if Boston doesn't want to name a stopper again, like last year. Perfect fit and use of funds.

2. Acquire High-Upside Starter Dylan Bundy

The weakness of this year's Red Sox team was unequivocally their starting rotation, despite putting a lot of money into it. The rotation is something they'll need to address, especially with Rick Porcello leaving in free agency and their top two starters, Chris Sale and David Price, going into next year coming off injuries. They need another arm, and they don't have the funds to just sign someone in free agency. So, why not acquire a struggling pitcher with upside? Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy fits the mold, and even though the Sox have a weak system, they have enough to wet the whistle of Baltimore. Bundy has shown signs of being a frontline starter, but he's yet to put it all together, and maybe a change of scenery is exactly what he needs.

1. Sign Mike Moustakas to Play Second Base

Is Mike Moustakas a perfect fit in Milwaukee? Yes. However, he has an $11 million mutual option, and it wouldn't come as a surprise if the two sides couldn't come together on an agreement. There's a good chance he reaches free agency, and it's Boston who should give Moustakas a multi-year deal, which he definitely deserves. The Moose would give this Red Sox middle of the order another left-handed bat, and even though he's a third baseman by trade, he's shown the ability to play second base, which is an obvious hole for Boston. It's probably too late for Moustakas to get that mega multi-year deal he was seeking a couple years ago, which only helps the Red Sox chances of pulling this off.
