The New York Yankees are undermanned in the back end of their pitching rotation following James Paxton's untimely back operation and Domingo German's suspension.

Though the club has the hurlers necessary to fill out the rotation, they're lacking depth, which makes their latest roster move hardly surprising.

According to MLB insider John Heyman, the Yanks have signed former Colorado Rockies hurler Chad Bettis.

New York has yet to formally announce the signing, but a plethora of reports indicate Bettis is on his way to join the team at Spring Training in Tampa.

The contract is said to include a bonus of $1.5 million if the 30-year-old right-hander makes the Yankees' Opening Day roster. He'll earn another $2 million if he meets undisclosed performance standards.

Bettis established himself as a capable option at the back end of Colorado's rotation, recording a 4.57 ERA in 301 innings from 2015-2016. Those numbers could be a lot worse considering he was often pitching in Coors Field's hitter-friendly altitude.

But Bettis has since seen ailments hamper his career. In 2016, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, but admirably returned to the diamond less than a year later.

In each of the last two seasons, Bettis spent time on the injured list, most notably with a left hip impingement. When he was able to get healthy and return, the Rockies placed him in their bullpen, where the Texas Tech product stumbled to the tune of a 6.08 ERA.

The Rockies cut Bettis shortly after the 2019 season, and he'll look to capitalize on a fresh start in the Bronx.
