Jordan Montgomery prematurely ended a bullpen session on Tuesday after experiencing discomfort.

Now, the New York Yankees are sending their injured southpaw to get an MRI on his pitching shoulder.

He threw just 15 pitches during his session down in Tampa before abruptly calling it off. Montgomery is in the midst of a long recovery process from Tommy John surgery that he underwent back in early 2018.

The 26-year-old seemed to have a promising career ahead of himself prior to the injury. He proved to be a valuable member of the starting rotation early, going 11-7 over his first 35 starts in pinstripes with a 3.84 ERA.

It's truly unfortunate that he's hit another injury snag in the middle of his attempt to return from baseball's most dreaded surgery.

There was hope heading into the year that if all went well, the Yankees could expect to have Montgomery back by sometime around August.

Now, though, the primary concern is identifying what's causing him discomfort and what can be done to minimize any harm it might cause.
