The New York Yankees have a huge decision to make at the catcher position. With Gary Sanchez still claiming the starter spot and Kyle Higashioka making decent strides every year, how might backup Austin Romine fit into the Yankees' future plans?

According to Yankees insider Bryan Hoch, management has indeed spoken with Romine's agent for a potential 2020 return to the Yankees.

However, it seems the team is ready to roll with Higashioka if Romine doesn't return.

Romine has been a more than serviceable backup catcher for the Yankees during his career, filling in admirably over the last two seasons while Sanchez was out with injuries. Last season, he hit .281 in 228 at-bats.

However, Romine's 30 years old. At this point, it might be time for the Yankees to let him go and give him the opportunity to start for another MLB team.

Higashioka is out of minor league options, meaning that if he's sent down to Triple-A, he'll be subject to outright waivers, and then any team can snatch him up.

The Yanks certainly face a tough situation. Carrying three catchers isn't ideal, so expect this situation to be resolved soon.
