Yankees First-Round Pick of Local Product Anthony Volpe Comes With Risk
By Sean Facey

The New York Yankees made a bold move in picking local product Anthony Volpe 30th overall.
Of course, as is the case with all picks, it's not without risk.
The New York Yankees are expected to take New Jersey high school shortstop Anthony Volpe with the No. 30 pick in the MLB Draft, sources tell ESPN.

There's no doubt that Volpe, an 18-year-old shortstop from Delbarton High School in New Jersey, is a worthy talent, but it's a questionable pick considering the talent that was still available.
They picked him in the first round despite the fact that he was rated the 63rd overall prospect coming into the draft.
It's especially bold when it's taken into consideration that Michael Busch, a top-30 prospect, was still on the board when New York selected Volpe.
Welcome to the #Yankees, Anthony Volpe! SS, from the Delbarton School in Jersey! #PinstripePride

He's not graded particularly poorly in any area save for the power department, but that's offset by Volpe's above-average running and hitting abilities. With a quality talent like Busch still on the board though, it feels like a reach.
The depth of the Yankees' farm system is proof that they know what they're doing when it comes to talent evaluation, but there's still no doubt that this was a risky pick by them.
