Why Anthony Davis Turning Down Lakers' Contract Extension Offer Doesn't Matter at All

With the trade deadline around the corner, we'll be seeing substantial talk about contract extensions and possible landing spots for everyone in the NBA.

With that came the Los Angeles Lakers offering Anthony Davis a four-year, $146 million extension on Tuesday. The superstar big man rejected it and fans freaked out for a moment, but guess what? It doesn't matter at all.

If Davis waits until free agency and declines his player option for the 2020-2021 season, the Lakers can offer him a five-year, $202 million contract, which they'll almost certainly do. So, yes, Davis declining this premature extension was a foregone conclusion.

He'll technically hit the open market, but based on the teams that will have the cap space to actually pay him, it's pretty much a guarantee he's going to stay in LA.

Davis is rejuvenating the Staples Center this season, averaging 27.1 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.6 blocks a game. He's dominating the low post at the moment, scoring 50.4% of his chances, only second to Joel Embiid. Also, despite a couple of minor issues, he's largely stayed healthy this year, which was a big concern heading into his first season with the Lakers.

The rest of the NBA would love to see the former No. 1 pick on the move this summer, but unfortunately Davis will most likely be signing a five-year extension come July. Get ready for another decade of Lakers dominance with Anthony Davis at the helm.
