VIDEO: Pete Alonso Ties Mark McGwire's Home Run Record With 28th Bomb Before July 1

The New York Mets had high hopes for first baseman Pete Alonso when they called him up for opening day. While the rest of the team has struggled, Alonso has lived up to the expectations this season, smacking home run after home run. Heading into Friday's matchup with the Atlanta Braves, Alonso was one home run short of tying Mark McGwire's home run record for homers hit before July 1, so it should be to no one's surprise that he was swinging for the fences early in this ball game.

With that bomb off Atlanta Braves ace Mike Soroka, Alonso is now tied with the legendary Mark McGwire's record. Soroka isn't an easy pitcher to hit dingers off of either, as he's only allowed three all season prior to that shot.

With that record tying homer, Alonso is continuing to solidify his position as the favorite to win NL Rookie of the Year.
