VIDEO: Mexican Player Chokes USMNT's Weston McKennie Directly in Front of Ref During Gold Cup Final

What has to happen here for a ref to intervene? During a Gold Cup Final that can be colloquially referred to as "chippy" (ahem), the USMNT and Mexico have scrapped to their limits, with Team USA attempting to echo their female counterparts with a title Sunday night. Apparently, they've got a whole 'nother group of people to overcome in order to grab a victory: the refs. Despite a clear choke (??) during a late scrum Sunday, directly in front of a referee, no whistles were blown.

With all due respect, what are we supposed to do here?

20-year-old Weston McKennie doesn't back down from any fight, and has proven to be a solid heir apparent to the man who used to wear his numeral, Clint Dempsey. Perhaps, though, he wouldn't have to fight and claw so hard if he got rewarded right when the choking began?

Unbelievable.
