History reared its ugly head on Monday, as the New England Patriots were accused of and later admitted to violating NFL rules for having a scout videotape the Cincinnati Bengals' play-calls on Sunday. Fans, skeptics and pundits alike all subsequently eviscerated the franchise, and ESPN's Scott Van Pelt was no different during his nightly "SportsCenter" segment.

"I also get that with this team there is history there," said Van Pelt. "I get it. I'm just unable to buy that level of completely unnecessary hubris. They can't be that desperate or dumb and spying on the one-win Bengals sideline would be both of those things."

SVP, like the rest of us, was simply so dumbfounded by the accusations that he almost couldn't believe it. Spying on the lowly, evidently tanking Bengals is as pathetic as it gets.

The uproar will continue surfacing in the coming days, but the only thing left to do now is wait and see what the NFL deems to be an appropriate punishment for the organization's violations.
