VIDEO: Dan Quinn Offers Unbelievably Tone-Deaf Take on Bringing DJ Durkin to Falcons' Training Camp

During his tenure as Maryland head coach, DJ Durkin was believed to be responsible for the creation of a toxic culture of physical and mental abuse, culminating in the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair after he was not afforded proper medical care following a strenuous workout. Durkin's time coaching football might not be over yet, unfortunately, as the Atlanta Falcons have brought him on as a guest instructor during training camp. Head coach Dan Quinn, who Durkin succeeded as Florida defensive coordinator in 2013, defended the addition of Durkin to the coaching staff by saying it was "in the best interest of the team."

Nothing says "team first" like bringing in someone who oversaw a program that was so toxic they canned him after two seasons and led to a player dying on the football field. Why don't you just say what's really going on? Your buddy from college can't get a job because of his past, and you helped him out. Coaching nepotism remains undefeated in the NFL.

Whatever Durkin's ability with Xs and Os are, there has to be point where Quinn and the Falcons decide that Durkin's ghastly past is too much to risk associating your brand with. How could you possibly sell this to teammates young and old and get them to buy in to this guy?

There's falling upward, and then there's potentially landing an NFL gig after being the person responsible for overseeing the death of a 19-year-old. Hopefully the Falcons realize the error of their ways and pull the plug on the Durkin experiment sooner rather than later.
