Steelers Need to Sign Cam Newton as Insurance Behind Ben Roethlisberger in Case Injury Woes Persist

The Carolina Panthers made the decision to part ways with former MVP and No. 1 overall pick Cam Newton as Matt Rhule tries to bring about wholesale change in Charlotte.

Newton has yet to find a landing spot for 2020, but his workouts with Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor could indicate he has LA on his mind.

The Pittsburgh Steelers better act fast if they want to secure the best possible backup for an aging, declining, perpetually injured Ben Roethlisberger.

Cam is an injury risk as well, but Pittsburgh should be able to piece 16 games together between the both of them. It also doesn't take a football genius to see that Newton is the higher-upside option when compared to Mason Rudolph.

If Big Ben does decide to hang it up after this year, Pittsburgh could have an ideal replacement lined up and ready to go in Newton if they pull off this deal. Given how he has been working out with Taylor of late, the Steelers need to act quick to prevent LA from snatching him up at the eleventh hour.

Newton absolutely deserves to be a backup in this league, and he is still one of the most talented quarterbacks in all of football when healthy. If Pittsburgh is able to protect Roethlisberger with Cam's unique and legendary skillset, this should give them peace of mind at the quarterback position.
