VIDEO: Sheffield United Robbed of Clear Goal vs Aston Villa in Premier League Return
By Max Smith

The Premier League is back... and so is VAR. Right out of the gate, the officials have already made a huge mistake in the league's first game from the coronavirus stoppage. In what looks to have been a certain goal, Aston Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland collected the ball and falls back into his own goal. The ball clearly crossed the line, but it wasn't ruled as such, leaving Sheffield United and their fans utterly furious.

These are the exact scenarios that led to VAR being implemented in the first place. This was an obvious goal that should have counted, but for some reason, it wasn't. So far, VAR has been far too inconsistent in the Premier League. It will disallow a goal for a player being a hair offside, but won't allow this goal after it clearly crossed the line.
This could be a huge break for Aston Villa, as they currently sit in the relegation zone. If they are able beat out the Blades today -- or at least avoid disaster -- they would jump out of the relegation zone and all the way into 16th.
If they come out with any points here, they'll have VAR to thank.

On the other hand, Sheffield United are in contention for European football next season. With a win, they'd jump to fifth in the table and into a Europa League spot. This would be an extremely disappointing way to drop points.
