With the 2020 NFL Draft kicking off on Thursday night, it's only natural for fans to brace themselves for how their respective teams will use their first-round selections. If there's one fear above all others, it's that your team will reach for a positional need rather than take the best overall guy on the board. Fortunately, Seattle Seahawks partisans can put those concerns to bed.

While speaking with the media on Tuesday, Seahawks general manager John Schneider revealed that he will be looking at taking the best player available with the 27th overall pick.

Seahawks fans should be encouraged by Schneider's comments, because this is the approach that every NFL general manager should take barring extreme circumstances. If our sports have shown us anything, it's that drafting a player based off positional needs tends avove all else tends to come with an increased chance of blowing up in a team's face more often than not. Subsequently, the best overall player on the board ends up falling into the lap of a team that won't be able to believe its dumb luck.

Many expected the Seahawks to take an offensive lineman with their first-round pick, but as Schneider points out, he already addressed those imperatives in free agency. At the start of the new league year, the Seahawks added former first-round pick Chance Warmack while re-signing guard Mike Iupati; there's no need to reach for a lineman, especially considering those in the top tier will be long gone once the Seahawks are first on the clock.

Whether it's running back, edge rusher, or defensive back, Schenider is going to take the best player available. As he should.
