The Carolina Panthers made a puzzling decision to appoint running back Christian McCaffrey as the highest-paid running back in NFL history on Monday. According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, McCaffrey's monster contract extension is worth $64 million over four years.

This news is a genuine bombshell and it goes without saying that it will have a lasting domino effect on teams with budding young RB's slated for new deals in due time. That includes Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints.

The way we see it, the Saints won't be able to afford the 24-year-old star.

As little sense as it would make for New Orleans to trade Kamara from strictly a football standpoint, this McCaffrey news confirms that it's a real possibility.

As of this writing, the Saints only have $3.5 million in cap space, which ranks 28th in the NFL. That headache isn't going anywhere with players like Drew Brees, Cameron Jordan, and Terron Armstead -- who together account for more than $45 million in cap space -- all on the books beyond the 2021 season.

Signing Kamara would become even more unfeasible if New Orleans were to commit a future to stud offensive guard Larry Warford, who's made the Pro Bowl three years running. The 28-year-old's deal is set to expire following the upcoming campaign.

You know how this works, folks. Kamara was already going to demand a salary that would make him one of the wealthiest RBs in the NFL. His asking price absolutely went up following McCaffrey's groundbreaking extension, and the Saints simply don't flaunt the financial flexibility to afford him.
