Remembering the Texans Signing Arian Foster as an Undrafted Free Agent and Hitting the Lottery

Before his career was ravaged by injuries, Arian Foster was one of the best running backs in the NFL. He was a All-Pro three times, and led NFL in rushing yards in once and rushing TDs twice.

His impressive career did not start in any kind of normal way, however. He wasn't a first-round pick, nor a second, nor a third, or even fourth-round selection. He actually went completely undrafted in 2009 after a solid career at Tennessee. After the draft, he wound up in Houston, where he would spend most of his career.

And the Texans couldn't have possibly known at the time just how lucky they were.

After being on the Texans' practice squad for the first part of his rookie season, he was called up to the team in November, and made his first start in Week 17.

After his first year, there was no stopping Foster. In addition to the All-Pros and the rushing title, he also hit the end zone 15 or more times twice in his career, recording a career-high 16 times in 2010, just his second season in the league. Additionally, he was extremely consistent, as he rushed for over 1,000 yards four times in a five-year span.

If it wasn't for the injuries, it's possible that Foster would still be a star ball carrier in the league today. Even though his career was cut short, he serves as a great example to the young players in the NFL that just went undrafted about just how much can truly be possible.
