Dwayne Haskins didn't exactly impress in his rookie year with the Redskins, getting thrust in and out of the starting role. Well, it looks like the team may be looking to start a quarterback competition ahead of the 2020 campaign.

According to Tony Pauline, the Redskins are anticipated to make a bid for free agent QB Philip Rivers, who is not expected to re-sign with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Rivers has been linked to various teams in free agency, including the Colts and Buccaneers, but the Redskins seem to have joined the fray. Despite having drafted Haskins in the first round last year, the team may feel he'd be better served waiting in the wings. Bringing in a veteran QB could help Haskins develop further and get a better understanding of the team's playbook, which was an apparent issue in his rookie season.

The 38-year-old gunslinger tossed 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions last year, in what was one of the worst statistical campaigns of his career. Still, there's reason to believe he could bounce back in 2020, and reuniting with Ron Rivera in D.C. could be of interest to Rivers.

The Redskins have also been rumored to be considering using their No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft to select a quarterback. It's a virtual guarantee that Joe Burrow will be off the board, but they could be intrigued by the prospect of drafting Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert.

The Redskins will certainly be a team to monitor when it comes to the future at quarterback, but it doesn't seem the team is ready to fully commit to Dwayne Haskins long term. If they're looking for somewhat of a rental option, reconnecting the pairing of Rivera and Rivers could be in the franchise's best interest.
