Reddit User Thinks Auston Matthews Leafs' Captaincy Was Revealed in Instagram Video at Media Day

We can't be taking information form Reddit users at face value, but this does look quite suspicious.

It may be a stretch, but someone on Reddit took a screenshot of an Instagram video from Toronto Maple Leafs media day, and they have potential evidence that Auston Matthews will be the team's next captain.

The Reddit user who originally found this, Ajking88, posted this on r/Leafs, so there's a possibility there was some Photoshop manipulation, and there's also contrary evidence in photographs from the NHL Media Tour.

First off, the Leafs have not had a captain since they traded Dion Phaneuf in the middle of the 2015-16 season. And with the trade of Patrick Marleau this summer, the team needs to establish leadership on the ice.

Matthews is clearly the star of the team, along with John Tavares, and has helped the Leafs make the playoffs in three consecutive seasons, a feat they had not accomplished in 15 years.

His on-ice presence is clear, as he has totaled 111 goals and 94 assists in three seasons. He has not created any controversy and is clearly a fan favorite.

If the Leafs are going to end their Stanley Cup drought this year and avoid tying the New York Rangers for the longest Cup wait, who's more fitting than Matthews to lead them there?
