Red Sox Reportedly Want Prospects for David Price and They Can Probably Forget About That

As the MLB offseason period enters its frigid winter months, the Boston Red Sox have some significant decisions to make about who's staying and who's going. And while outfielders Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr. could both be on their way out of town, there's another name the Sox would surely rather rid themselves of due to his burdensome contract: David Price.

Unfortunately, notes Peter Gammons, the team is insisting on receiving multiple prospects in any deal for Price. And according to one mystery GM, it's hard to imagine such a trade could ever materialize.

Well, you can't state it much clearer than that.

Boston is surely headed in a new direction under new "Chief Baseball Officer" Chaim Bloom, but it's not yet clear just how that's going to look. The young exec's legacy could very well hinge on what gets done with not just Betts, but Price's deal -- he's owed $32 million in each of the next three seasons! -- is an eyesore, particularly for the team that paid the league's highest luxury tax bill in 2019.

Sure, everyone would love to get exciting prospects back in return for their aging veterans on albatross deals, but that sounds like a pipe dream for the Fenway boys. If the Sox really do want to get off all this money they owe Price, they have to be willing to relent and potentially bite a bullet or two.
