Boston Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland hasn't played since Saturday because of an ailing knee, but that's not what's sending him to the shelf.

On Wednesday, the Red Sox placed Moreland on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain.

Moreland's injury allowed the Red Sox to make some changes to their leaky bullpen. On top of Moreland going on the IL, Boston optioned Travis Lakins after a brutal outing on Tuesday night.

To fill those two spots on the active roster, the Red Sox have recalled left-hander Josh Taylor and right-hander Colten Brewer.

Moreland could return to the team in a week, as the IL stint is retroactive to Saturday. While he's on the sideline, Steve Pearce and Michael Chavis will fill the void left by Moreland.

The veteran first baseman was a bright spot early for the struggling Red Sox, and in 46 games this season he's slashing .228/.320/.550 with 13 home runs and 34 RBI.
