Often lost in the praise heaped on head coaches and star players is the work put in by the assistants who helped craft the schemes that make football teams successful week to week.

But that's not the case for Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman today, as he was tabbed as the NFL's Assistant Coach of the Year for 2019 on Saturday.

It should come as no surprise, really. Roman, in just his first year with Baltimore, helped craft the system that gave the Ravens one of the most potent and dominant offensive systems the league has seen in quite some time. They topped the league in a slew of statistical categories, including points (531), first downs (386), and rushing yards (3,296), finishing at 14-2 with the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

Perhaps most notable of all, however, was the work he did to help squeeze every last bit of talent out of Lamar Jackson. Entering the season, Jackson was viewed as a talented-but-raw quarterback who still needed plenty of work. He ended the year as the MVP of the league.

The young star blew the league away in Roman's system, throwing for 3,127 yards and rushing for 1,206 more, a record for a quarterback. Though the year ended on a low note for the team thanks to an abrupt playoff exit against the Titans, their offensive achievements were simply spectacular in 2019.

In superb year filled with high-flying accomplishments for Roman and his offense, this is an award well-earned.
