The Texas Rangers are in search of an upgrade at catcher, and are seeking out some options on the open market.

Well, it looks like the team has its sights set on former Astros backstop Robinson Chirinos. The two sides are reportedly working on a deal which would bring the 35-year-old back to Arlington.

Chirinos spent six years with the Rangers, from 2013-18, before joining the Astros in 2019. Last year he clubbed 17 home runs and drove in 58 runs while helping the Astros make the World Series.

This would be a great addition for the Rangers, as Chirinos is likely the best catching option left on the free agent market.

The Rangers current option behind the plate is Jeff Mathis, a 15-year veteran who hit .158 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 86 games in Arlington in 2019. Chirinos and Mathis will likely split time behind the plate next season, so the Rangers will have plenty of veteran experience to work with new acquisition Corey Kluber.

With the Rangers looking to compete in a suddenly top-heavy AL West, locking down a veteran backstop like Chirinos could go a long way for the team.
