Rams Restructuring Jared Goff's New Deal Before it Even Starts Proves What a Disaster it Was

After their appearance in Super Bowl LIII in 2019, the Los Angeles Rams paid a high price tag to keep their core together. No one benefitted more from the Rams' spending spree than Jared Goff.

Goff is tied with Aaron Rodgers for the seventh-largest contract in the NFL, signing a four-year, $134 million extension in September of 2019. Signing someone of Goff's level to that much money seemed worrisome even after leading the Rams to the Super Bowl, and it looks downright silly now.

The Rams are already starting to come around on their mistake, restructuring his contract to try and climb out of cap hell.

The Rams are already regretting committing so much of their money to just one player. Goff's fate is luckier than running back Todd Gurley's, who they signed to a four-year $60 million extension in 2018 and was released earlier this summer.

The Rams will be using much the cap space created by the restructuring of Goff's deal to sign linebacker Leonard Floyd and defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson.

Such drastic moves one season removed from a Super Bowl appearance is shocking and shows a clear lack in faith from the Rams front office. Admittedly, Goff did not impress lass season. His 86.5 passer rating was 22nd in the NFL.

The initial reaction to Goff's contract was largely correct, and the need to restructure such a deal already isn't a good sign of what's to come.
