3 Players Who Definitely Won't Be on the 49ers Roster Next Year

The San Francisco 49ers were the No. 1 team in the NFC this season thanks to some fantastic roster-building done by Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch, but they fell agonizingly short in their quest for a Super Bowl title thanks to a spirited comeback in the big game by the Kansas City Chiefs. In order to retool for a big run next season, some house-cleaning will be required -- with that in mind, these three players in particular will likely be playing elsewhere at the start of the 2020 campaign.

3. RB Matt Breida

Matt Breida combined for 235 rushing yards against the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals in 2019. He only had 388 yards the rest of the year. Breida is due for a new contract, and the 49ers are already paying Jerick McKinnon, Tevin Coleman and Raheem Mostert into 2020. If McKinnon ends up healthy, there is no room or money for Breida in 2020.

2. WR Emmanuel Sanders

Emmanuel Sanders was acquired before the trade deadline, but was not signed to any contract extension. He appears to have been a one-year rental in the push for a Super Bowl title. Sanders is entering his age 33 season, and may be asking for a multi-year deal this offseason that the team would be hesitant to offer. If the 49ers wanted to keep him, he likely would have already gotten a new deal. They're instead looking to maximize Sanders while he's still here.

1. TE Garrett Celek

Garrett Celek signed a four-year extension in 2016, and spent the fourth year of the deal injured. The tight end was one of many 49ers to hit the injured reserve in 2019, and will be 32 years old in May. Ater a full season out with an injury, the team will likely seek tight end help behind George Kittle of the younger, healthier variety.
