The Philadelphia Phillies gave pitching coach Chris Young one season to turn around their moribund starting rotation, and they gave him the boot after he failed to do so.

The 38-year-old Young was let go by Gabe Kapler and the Phillies after just one season at the big league level.

For the better part of the decade, Young was a scout and scouting supervisor for the Padres and Astros before being made an assistant pitching coach in 2017.

Despite headline-grabbing names like Aaron Nola and Jake Arrieta in the rotation, the Phillies were as average a staff as they come, ranking 17th in baseball in ERA (4.53) and starter ERA (4.64). On a team with Bryce Harper, Rhys Hoskins, and the offense doing their part, this was killer for their postseason chances.

Young will land on his feet somewhere in baseball, but it's hard to argue against him being relieved of his duties given how poor he performed on the job this year.
