Peter Gammons Claims Mookie Betts-Dodgers Trade is 'Inevitable' and Lists Likely Players in Deal
By Michael Luciano

The Boston Red Sox seem keen on trading away former AL MVP Mookie Betts, with two NL West rivals in the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers having both called Boston with regards to a potential Betts trade.
According to the venerable Peter Gammons, sources around the NL believe that a Betts trade to LA is "inevitable" at this point. Furthermore, the package of prospects Boston would get back is apparently also nearly finalized, as outfielder Alex Verdugo, lefty pitcher Caleb Ferguson, top infield prospect Jeter Downs, and one other low-level prospect will become Red Sox players in a Betts deal.
Three different NL folks today predicted Betts-to-L.A. is "inevitable." Consensus deal:Alex Verdugo, Inf Jeter Downs, pitcher, maybe A prospect. Think P is LH Caleb Ferguson, 95 MPH FB/CB guy, 113-39 K-BB in 93.1 IP, eventual starter. Got brushed off Gray

The big get in this potential deal would be Verdugo, who was nothing short of excellent in limited playing time last season. In under 400 at-bats, Verdugo posted a 3.1 WAR while hitting .294 with 12 home runs. The 24-year-old would be under team control for the next five seasons.
Ferguson pitched to a 4.84 ERA in 46 games last season, while Downs hit .276 with 24 home runs in the minor leagues, most of which came with the Single-A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.
Hard to envision any Red Sox-Dodgers deal for Betts not involving Alex Verdugo. Could immediately play RF, then move over once JBJ departs and OF is realigned. Can hit, has plus arm and will make less than $600k for next two seasons. Under team control through 2024.

If the Red Sox do finally bite the bullet and trade Betts, the Dodgers are a willing buyer that could set Boston up nicely for the future in any potential deal. It almost makes too much sense.
And if you don't believe Gammons, remember, he said the same thing about Gerrit Cole to the Yankees with similar certainty.
