The New Year's Six slate will get underway on Saturday afternoon with the Cotton Bowl that will feature two programs facing off against one another for the first time. The ranked showdown will see No. 10 Penn State squared up against No. 17 Memphis.

The Nittany Lions won't necessarily be disappointed to be playing in the Cotton Bowl, but they didn't exactly expect to be here. An imposing 8-0 start was ultimately for naught following their shocking road loss to Minnesota.

Knowing their Playoff fate was sealed, Penn State stumbled to the finish line, going 2-2 in their final four fixtures, including an unconvincing 27-6 win over lowly Rutgers.

Expect James Franklin's side to be motivated to end this season on a high note.

The Tigers, on the other hand, will be playing in their biggest bowl fixture in program history. Make no bones about it. They enter with a 12-1 record, with their only loss coming in a 30-28 road defeat versus Temple.

Memphis will, however, enter this Cotton Bowl tilt without head coach Mike Norvell, who, of course, departed to take over the vacancy at Florida State after the Tigers captured the AAC crown.

It's anyones guess as to how they'll play in their first game without Norvell.
