The NFL is considering doing away with the antiquated onside kick, and will instead give teams the chance to retain possession by trying to convert a 4th-and-15 play from the 25-yard line.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, the best in the league at going deep down the field, seems to be a bit nervous about going 15 yards on one play with no room for error, even if most of Twitter thinks he would excel in that scenario.

The rule change, which comes from the old AAF, institutes a 4th-and-15 play that has a 15 percent success rate, as compared with the seven percent success rate of onside kicks in the last two years.

While Kansas City would clearly be the team everyone would prefer to see try and convert a 4th-and-15, Mahomes and company might not find themselves in a ton of scenarios where they would need to chuck it deep to maintain possession, as they race out to big leads so frequently.

Any rule change that stops kickers from chipping short little pop-ups with a seven percent likelihood they will actually execute the play properly and allows players like Mahomes to throw the ball 50 yards down the field more frequently is a win in our book.
