Panthers Not Signing Another QB is a Vote of Confidence for Cam Newton's Health
By Sam Dunn
Carolina Panthers fans are surely gnashing their teeth after being forced to watch franchise quarterback Cam Newton go down with a foot sprain in Thursday night's preseason game against the New England Patriots. The rough moment threw his status for Week 1 of the regular season up in the air, but one important fact should provide some solace for the faithful in Charlotte.
The Panthers aren't signing another quarterback before the start of the campaign, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
GM Marty Hurney's decision to stand pat says everything. Foot injuries are nothing to be trifled with, so even the fact that Newton's MRI coming back negative didn't do quite enough to quell the anxiety around Panthers HQ. All told, the team opting to stick with the guys they've got -- that's Kyle Allen, Taylor Heinicke, and rookie Will Grier -- rather than rush toward the free agent market is a nice vote of confidence for Newton's ability to recover promptly.
Bullet, consider yourself dodged. Be honest-- seeing anyone else take meaningful reps behind center in a Carolina uniform would just look weird.
